Great Reads from 2022
“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” - Murakami
As we head into the New Year, think about your accomplishments and failures from 2022. Now, start to formulate a plan for 2023 and execute.
In a prior post, I challenged myself to not set a goal for reading a certain number of books, but rather to read more consistently.
This approach has worked for me, but find something that works for you.
Again, even if you read for just 10 minutes a day consistently, you will be surprised at the results.
Try to be cognizant of the books that you read. You don’t want them all to be centered around one topic.
Here are some of my favorites from 2022:
The Choice by Dr. Edith Eger - Dr. Edith Eger was sent to Auschwitz at age 16 and describes the horrific events she put up with during the Holocaust. With all the bullshit being spewed online these days, I challenge you to read this book or Man’s Search for Meaning. Eger reminds us all that we do in fact have a choice in this world, despite what is going on around us.
Courage is Calling by Ryan Holiday - Ryan Holiday is one of the biggest advocates for stoicism and has dedicated his time to writing a stoic virtue series. So far, he has produced Courage is Calling and Discipline is Destiny. Courage is Calling highlights the aspects of philosophy that can most benefit people.
Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel - Morgan Housel is arguably one of my favorite writers. I often quote his blogs which you can find here. Every year, my cousins and I do Secret Santa for Christmas. The ritual typically involves picking names on Thanksgiving. Well, this Thanksgiving I blacked out and had no idea who I had to get a gift for (shocker). As a result, I bought this book and gave it to all of my cousins. This book offers great insights to how we think about money and building wealth. This is a must read.
Just Keep Buying by Nick Maggiulli - I’ve already dedicated a blog to this book. Nick provides some best practices on saving, investing and growing your wealth backed by data. For those that want to learn more about personal finance and investing in general, this is a great book to read. Also, here is Nick’s personal blog.
Liars Poker by Michael Lewis - You most likely know Michael Lewis if you are familiar with the Big Short, Blind Side, or Moneyball. His ability to tell stories in a digestible yet compelling way, with humor sprinkled in, makes his books incredible. Lewis started his career at the infamous Solomon Brothers and offers a glimpse of what it was like on Wall Street in the late 1980’s.
